What Does It Take To Win The Gold?

By Christopher R. Phillip

You’ve likely seen restored vehicles with Gold-award certification? What exactly does that mean?

In the classic-car hobby, a gold-award car is one that has been points-judged by a trained judge appointed by the board of directors of a national organization.

National Corvette Restorers Society, Pontiac Oakland Club International, and Antique Auto Club of America—they all have points judging.

Points judging starts with a perfect score and then points are taken for any flaws in the restoration.

If the score is within a pre-determined number of points of perfect, it receives a Gold award. For the Pontiac Oakland Club International, a perfect score is 400 and any classic vehicle with 365 or more points receives a Gold award.

It’s tough to get that close to perfect, but the grand-prize GTO in the 2018 GTO Dream Giveaway brought to you by Ames Performance Engineering did just that.
