  Fun Facts: Bandit Dream Giveaway®

Smokey and the Bandit
Kelsey Tire Inc

What do the terms “Screaming Chicken,” “Golden Eagle” and “Hood Applique” all have in common?

They are all slang for the bigger-than-Big Bird decal that graces the 1977 Pontiac Trans Am Special Edition driven by Hollywood legend Burt Reynolds in the classic car-guy film Smokey and the Bandit.

How well do you know the diehard details of the movie? Test your knowledge with these five fun facts.

And remember that the 2017 Bandit Dream Giveaway means one lucky Smokey and the Bandit fan will go home with a 1977 Bandit Trans Am chosen by Burt Reynolds to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Smokey and the Bandit.

Fun Fact #1
Smokey and the Bandit earned $127 million at the North American box office, making it the second-highest-grossing movie of 1977, following Star Wars. (Source: Movietone.com)

Fun Fact #2
According to Smokey and the Bandit director Hal Needham, Pontiac gave him three Trans Ams and two Bonnevilles (the Sheriff’s patrol car) with which to shoot the film. One of the Trans Ams was completely destroyed during the famous bridge jump scene. (Source: Shortlist.com)

Fun Fact #3
The Trans Am for the bridge jump was equipped with a booster rocket, the same type that was used by Evel Knievel during his failed Snake River Canyon jump. (Source: Shortlist.com)

Fun Fact #4
Buford T. Justice was the name of a real Florida Highway patrolman known to Burt Reynolds’ father, who himself was once a chief of police. In fact, Burt’s old man was the inspiration for the word “sumbitch,” a phrase Burt told Gleason he uttered often. (Source: Shortlist.com)

Fun Fact #5
Whenever Smokey and the Bandit aired on network TV, Gleason’s “sumbitch” would be re-dubbed with the novelty phrase “scum bum.” That became such a popular epithet among kids that, in 2007, Hot Wheels issued a Bandit-esque Pontiac with the phrase “Scum Bum” printed on the rear.
